Important Information Issued by Cyber Crime Cell
In an alarming development, cybercriminals have devised a new and deceitful method to defraud senior citizens and pension holders under the guise of updating the Jeevan Pramaan Patra—a crucial life certificate required by pensioners to continue receiving their pensions.
This article aims to inform and educate pension holders about this fraud, how it works, and what steps to take to avoid falling prey.
How the Scam Works
Cyber fraudsters are now calling pensioners, pretending to be officials from the Pension Directorate. These criminals often have detailed personal information of the pensioner, including:
- Date of appointment
- Date of retirement
- PPO number (Pension Payment Order number)
- Aadhaar Card number
- Permanent address
- Email ID
- Monthly pension amount
- Amount received on retirement
- Nominee details
With this seemingly authentic information, they gain the trust of the pensioner, convincingly impersonating government authorities.
They claim that the pensioner’s Jeevan Pramaan Patra needs to be updated online and ask the pensioner to share an OTP (One-Time Password) sent to their registered mobile number.
What Happens When OTP is Shared
Once the OTP is shared:
- The scammers gain full access to the pensioner’s bank account.
- They withdraw the entire pension amount from the account.
- The stolen funds are immediately transferred to fake bank accounts or digital wallets, making recovery extremely difficult.
This results in severe financial loss for the pension holder and their families.
Key Warnings from the Cyber Crime Cell
- The Pension Directorate never calls pensioners to request OTPs or to update Jeevan Pramaan Patra online.
- They do not update Jeevan Pramaan Patra over the phone or internet.
- Only the pension holder can update the Jeevan Pramaan Patra by personally visiting the Pension Directorate or authorized service centers.
What Pensioners Should Do
- Do Not Share OTPs with anyone, even if they seem to know your personal details.
- Never respond to unknown callers claiming to be from the Pension Office or Government Departments.
- Personally visit the Pension Directorate or use government-authorized platforms for updating your Jeevan Pramaan Patra.
- Report suspicious calls immediately to the Cyber Crime Cell, Hazratganj, Lucknow or your nearest cyber police station.
- Educate fellow pensioners by sharing this message widely.
Conclusion
The Cyber Crime Cell has urged all pensioners to remain vigilant and cautious. With growing digitization, frauds are becoming more sophisticated. Staying informed and skeptical of unsolicited communication is the best defense against such scams.
