This is most important for Ex-Servicemen and Their Families.
Why This Advisory is Important?
If an ex-serviceman (PBOR or equivalent) passes away due to an accident, the family is eligible to receive an insurance cover of ₹30 lakh under the DSP (Defence Service Pension) scheme. This benefit is available only if the death occurs due to an accident, including during treatment after being admitted to a hospital.
What Should Be Done in Case of Accidental Death?
- If an ex-serviceman dies because of an accident and was hospitalized for treatment:
- The attending doctor must mention clearly in the Postmortem Report that death occurred due to accident-related injuries during treatment.
- This step is very important because the insurance claim depends on this confirmation.
Why Postmortem Report is Necessary?
The insurance company will only approve the ₹30 lakh claim if the cause of death is officially recorded as accidental. Without this, the family may not receive the insurance benefit.
Documents Required for Claim Application
The widow or nominee must submit an application to the bank along with these documents:
- Postmortem Report (PM Report)
- Aadhaar Card
- Ex-Serviceman Identity Card
- Bank Passbook
- Copy of FIR (First Information Report)
All documents must be self-attested photo copies.
Important Instructions Regarding Bank Account
- If there is a Joint Account with wife, do NOT convert it into a Single Account immediately.
- This is important because the insurance process requires the joint account to remain active.
- After the ₹30 lakh insurance claim is settled, then the account can be converted to a single account for pension transfer.
- The widow should then apply to start her family pension.
Step-by-Step Process
- Inform the bank and concerned authorities about the accidental death.
- Ensure the postmortem report clearly mentions death due to accident.
- Collect all required documents listed above.
- Submit an application to the bank for the insurance claim.
- After receiving ₹30 lakh insurance amount, apply for pension transfer in the widow’s name.
Key Points to Remember
- This insurance cover is only for accidental deaths, not natural deaths.
- PBOR/Ex-servicemen families must keep all records safe (ID card, Aadhaar, FIR copy).
- Never rush to close or convert the joint account before insurance settlement.
- Proper documentation and timely submission can ensure the family receives the benefit without delay.
