In an important update for the welfare of Ex-Servicemen, the Central Organisation of ECHS has announced a revised ceiling limit for the procurement of basic hearing aids for veterans. The circular, addressed to the Directorate of Indian Army Veterans (DIAV), reflects the ongoing efforts to align support schemes with current market realities.
Why the Revision?
The primary reason for the revision is the technological advancement and widespread availability of hearing aids, which has led to a consistent decline in their prices over time. The government continues to support only the basic types of hearing aids, allowing beneficiaries to purchase more advanced models by paying the additional cost themselves.
Updated Ceiling Limits for Hearing Aids
The government has gradually reduced the maximum reimbursement amount for hearing aids over the years as technology became more affordable:
| Policy Letter & Date | Digital BTE Limit (Rs.) | ITC/CIC Limit (Rs.) |
|---|---|---|
| 18 May 2012 (B/49770/AG) | 20,000.00 | 25,000.00 |
| 31 May 2018 (B/49761/AG) | 15,000.00 | 20,000.00 |
| 10 Jun 2022 (B/49761/AG) | 8,000.00 | 9,000.00 |
This latest policy emphasizes cost-effective support while still ensuring that beneficiaries can access basic, good-quality hearing aids within the approved limit.
Implications for Veterans
This revision signifies a balance between budgetary optimization and veteran healthcare. It encourages veterans to choose practical, affordable hearing solutions while giving them the freedom to opt for advanced models at their own cost.
Final Note
The circular concludes by urging relevant departments to take necessary action in line with the updated policy. Copies have been forwarded to senior officials and veterans’ representatives, including Capt Narinder Kumar Mahajan (Retd) of Disabled War Veterans (India).
