Historical Background of the Regiment of Artillery

The origins of Indian artillery can be traced back to 28 September 1827, when the first artillery unit, the 5 (Bombay) Mountain Battery, was raised. This date is commemorated every year as Gunners’ Day.
Post-Independence, the Regiment of Artillery was restructured and became one of the largest arms of the Indian Army.
Over the decades, the regiment has transformed into a modern, technology-driven force equipped with state-of-the-art guns, rockets, and missiles, while upholding the traditions of courage and discipline.

Role of Artillery in the Indian Military

The Regiment of Artillery, often called the “God of War”, plays a decisive role in shaping the battlefield. Its responsibilities include:

Firepower Support: Delivering accurate and sustained fire support during combat operations.
Surveillance and Target Acquisition: Using advanced radars, UAVs, and satellite-based systems to locate enemy positions.
Air Defence Role: Protecting vital assets and formations from aerial threats through anti-aircraft guns and missile systems.
Force Multiplier: Acting as a backbone in both offensive and defensive operations by neutralizing enemy infrastructure and troop concentrations.

Proud Achievements of the Regiment of Artillery

Indo-Pak Wars (1947, 1965, 1971, 1999): Artillery fire proved decisive in breaking enemy advances and securing India’s victories. In the 1971 war, artillery bombardment played a crucial role in the liberation of Bangladesh.
Kargil War (1999): The Bofors howitzers and sustained artillery fire at high altitudes were instrumental in destroying enemy bunkers and recapturing strategic peaks.
Modernization Drive: Induction of advanced systems like the Pinaka Multi-Barrel Rocket Launchers, Smerch Rockets, Dhanush Guns, M-777 Ultra-Light Howitzers, and indigenous surveillance radars has significantly boosted India’s strike capability.
United Nations Missions: Indian artillerymen have also represented the country with distinction in peacekeeping operations worldwide.
