2206 More ECHS Empanelled Hospitals in India available this year

Besides Military Hospitals, Ex-Servicemen, serving personnel, and other ECHS beneficiaries are entitled to avail medical treatment from empanelled private hospitals under the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS). However, beneficiaries have frequently reported difficulties in obtaining admission to empanelled hospitals, particularly during medical emergencies, due to the non-availability of beds and limited healthcare infrastructure.

Recognising these challenges, the ECHS Central Organisation has undertaken proactive measures to expand its network of empanelled healthcare providers across the country. The objective is to improve accessibility to quality healthcare services and ensure that beneficiaries do not face hardship in availing timely treatment.

As per Ministry of Defence (Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare) Letter No. 22B(04)/2010/US(WE)/D(Res) dated 18 February 2011, Quality Council of India (QCI) accreditation or National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH) certification has been made mandatory for hospitals seeking empanelment under ECHS. This requirement aims to maintain high standards of healthcare services for beneficiaries.

Despite these efforts, a significant challenge continues to persist in Tier-II and Tier-III cities, as well as remote and rural areas, where the number of empanelled hospitals remains inadequate. As a result, ECHS beneficiaries residing in these regions often have to travel long distances to access specialised treatment or emergency medical care, causing inconvenience and delays in treatment.

In view of the growing healthcare needs of the Ex-Servicemen community, there is an increasing need to encourage more hospitals in underserved areas to obtain the necessary accreditation and join the ECHS network. Expanding empanelment in such regions would greatly enhance healthcare accessibility and ensure equitable medical facilities for all beneficiaries, irrespective of their place of residence.

At such locations few private HCOs are functional and are willing for empanelment with ECHS. However, these Hospitals have not undertaken QCI/NABH certifications which is a mandatory requirement for empanelment with ECHS. Hospitals in remote areas are mostly functioning with minimum certification as required by State Govts. ECHS has empanelled huge number of hospitals and medical healthcare organisations to provide quality healthcare facilities to the beneficiaries. Here is a detailed Statewise and yearwise statistics of Empanelled hospitals.
