Despite their proven capabilities, employment opportunities for ex-servicemen in government services remain largely concentrated in security, Group ‘C’, and erstwhile Group ‘D’ posts. Opportunities in Group ‘A’ and Group ‘B’ Gazetted services continue to be limited, with only a few states providing meaningful age relaxation or reservation benefits. The Government has, however, taken steps to strengthen the rehabilitation and second-career prospects of veterans through recent policy reforms, including the Ex-servicemen (Re-employment in Central Civil Services & Posts) Amendment Rules, 2026, which expanded the definition of ex-servicemen to include eligible Military Nursing Service (MNS) personnel.
