The Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme (PMSS) is an important educational welfare scheme for eligible wards and widows of Armed Forces personnel. Students selected for PMSS receive financial assistance for eligible professional and technical courses, subject to the prescribed conditions.
Receiving the first instalment of PMSS is not the end of the application process. For subsequent instalments, the selected student has to submit an Online Renewal Application after completion of each academic year, until completion of the approved course.
The Kendriya Sainik Board (KSB) has issued specific instructions for students/Ex-Servicemen (ESM) regarding PMSS renewal.
This article explains the complete PMSS renewal process, including what students should do after receiving the first-year scholarship amount, how to select the next instalment, what documents are required, how to fill the renewal form, and what different application statuses mean.
PMSS Renewal: Most Important Rule
Students who have already been selected for PMSS and are currently studying in the 2nd or subsequent year do NOT have to submit a New Application.
They are required to submit the Renewal Application only.
This distinction is very important because a student who has already been selected for PMSS should not apply again as a fresh/first-year applicant.
What Happens After the First PMSS Instalment?
The scholarship amount for the First Instalment is paid immediately after selection in the PMSS merit list, subject to the applicable processing and payment procedure.
After receiving the first instalment, the student should:
- Confirm that the PMSS amount has been credited to the bank account.
- Note the amount received.
- Note the date on which the amount was received.
- Keep the relevant bank statement/passbook entry safely.
- Complete the academic year successfully.
- Obtain the required marksheets/certificates from the educational institution.
- Submit the Online Renewal Application for the next instalment.
The previous PMSS payment details are important because they have to be entered in the renewal application.
Important: Fill the PMSS Payment Details
As per the KSB renewal checklist, the scholarship amount already received and date of receipt year-wise from PMSS have to be entered in the renewal application under the relevant field, including Serial No. 14.
Therefore, after receiving the first-year PMSS amount, students should not simply assume that the payment information will no longer be required.
Keep the PMSS payment details safely until completion of the course.
PMSS Renewal Is Required Every Academic Year
KSB’s renewal instructions clearly state that for subsequent payment, students should submit an Online Renewal Application on completion of each academic year, till completion of the course.
Therefore, PMSS students generally need to follow this cycle:
Selection → First Instalment → Complete Academic Year → Renewal Application → Next Instalment → Complete Next Academic Year → Renewal Application → Further Instalment
The process continues until the approved course is completed, subject to eligibility and the prescribed academic conditions.
PMSS Renewal Eligibility Conditions
The continuation of PMSS is subject to strict academic requirements.
1. 50% Marks Are Mandatory
50% marks are mandatory in each semester/academic year.
Students should therefore carefully check their semester/year results before submitting the renewal application.
2. Passing All Subjects in First Attempt Is Mandatory
Passing all subjects in each semester/year in the FIRST ATTEMPT is a mandatory requirement for continuation of the scholarship.
This is one of the most important conditions of PMSS renewal.
3. Failure or RA Can Lead to Permanent Closure of Scholarship
KSB’s renewal instructions state that if a student fails or gets RA in any subject, his/her scholarship will be closed forever.
Such a student will not be entitled to subsequent instalments of PMSS.
Therefore, students should not consider the renewal application as merely a routine formality. Academic performance directly affects continuation of the scholarship.
4. Apply Within One Year of Result Declaration
A student can apply for renewal of the scholarship within ONE YEAR from the declaration of the result.
Students should therefore avoid unnecessary delay in submitting their renewal application.
Step-by-Step PMSS Renewal Application Process
Step 1: Visit the Official KSB Website
Students should use the official Kendriya Sainik Board (KSB) website and access the PMSS section.
Use the official KSB portal for the renewal application rather than relying on unofficial websites or third-party links.
Step 2: Go to PMSS Renewal Application
Select the PMSS section and choose:
Renewal Application
Students already selected for PMSS and studying in the 2nd or subsequent year should select Renewal Application, not New Application.
Step 3: Keep Your PMSS Selection Details Ready
Before opening the renewal form, keep the following information available:
- PMSS Selection Serial Number
- Registered mobile number
- Registered email ID
- Bank account details
- Previous PMSS payment details
- University/college details
- Academic year/semester results
- Original marksheets
- Required KSB certificates/annexures
Step 4: Enter the PMSS Selection Serial Number
The renewal application requires the student to enter the Selection Serial Number.
After entering the selection serial number, use the option to retrieve/get the student’s existing PMSS details.
Many details from the original PMSS application are populated by the system.
Students should carefully verify the information displayed on the renewal form.
Step 5: Select the Correct PMSS Instalment
The student must select the next applicable instalment.
For example:
| Previous PMSS Payment Received | Renewal Application |
| 1st Instalment received | Apply for 2nd Instalment |
| 2nd Instalment received | Apply for 3rd Instalment |
| 3rd Instalment received | Apply for 4th Instalment |
Therefore, if the student has already received the First Instalment, the renewal application should be submitted for the Second Instalment.
Students should carefully select the correct instalment before forwarding the application.
Step 6: Enter Academic Performance Details
The renewal application requires academic information relating to the completed semester/year.
Students should keep the official marksheets ready and enter:
- Total marks
- Marks obtained
- Relevant semester/year details
- Other information requested in the online form
The percentage should be checked carefully against the academic record.
Remember:
50% marks in each semester/academic year + passing all subjects in first attempt are essential for continuation as per KSB’s renewal instructions.
Step 7: Enter PMSS Amount Already Received
Students must also provide details of PMSS scholarship already received.
The KSB checklist requires the student to provide the:
- Scholarship amount already received
- Date of receipt
- Year-wise PMSS payment details, as applicable
This is particularly important for students applying for renewal after receiving their first PMSS instalment.
Example
Suppose:
First PMSS Instalment received: ₹30,000
Date of credit: 15 March 2026
The student should keep these details available while completing the renewal application.
The exact amount should always be taken from the student’s actual PMSS payment record/bank credit and not guessed.
Step 8: Provide Information About Other Financial Assistance
The renewal application also asks about financial assistance received from sources other than PMSS.
Students should provide the required information accurately.
Important
Do not show the PMSS amount received from KSB as “Other Financial Assistance.”
PMSS payments should be entered in the appropriate PMSS payment section.
Documents Required for PMSS Renewal
Students should prepare the documents before beginning the online renewal application.
As per the KSB renewal checklist, the documents include the applicable:
1. Bonafide Certificate – Annexure-1
The Bonafide Certificate should be obtained from the educational institution in the prescribed format and duly authenticated by the competent authority.
2. Examination Passing Certificate – Annexure-2
The prescribed Examination Passing Certificate should be completed and authenticated as required.
3. Aadhaar Linking Certificate – Annexure-3
The prescribed Aadhaar Linking Certificate is required as per KSB’s instructions and involves certification by the Bank Manager.
4. Original Marksheets
The relevant original university/college marksheets should be scanned and uploaded.
Students should be particularly careful about the requirement relating to original marksheets.
5. Bank Passbook / Cancelled Cheque
The required bank document showing the student’s bank account details should be uploaded as prescribed.
6. Student’s Aadhaar Card
The Aadhaar document should be uploaded as required by the KSB portal/checklist.
7. Annexure-4, Where Applicable
Annexure-4 is applicable in cases where the university issues marksheets at the end of the entire course rather than after every semester/year, as specified by KSB.
Scan Original Documents Carefully
KSB’s renewal checklist instructs students to scan original documents and ensure that the scanned documents are clearly legible.
Before uploading, check:
- Entire document is visible.
- Name is clearly readable.
- Registration/enrolment number is readable.
- Marks are clearly visible.
- Signatures are visible.
- Stamps/seals are visible.
- No page is missing.
- The correct document is uploaded against the correct field.
Internet-Generated Marksheets
Students should pay special attention to the KSB requirement regarding marksheets.
The renewal checklist states that internet-generated marksheets will not be entertained.
Therefore, where an official university-issued marksheet is required, students should use the prescribed official marksheet rather than simply uploading a downloaded online result.
Step 9: Save the Renewal Application
After entering all information and uploading the documents, carefully review the application.
Check:
- Personal details
- Course details
- Academic marks
- Selected instalment
- PMSS payment already received
- Date of previous payment
- Bank details
- Uploaded documents
Then save the application.
But remember:
Saving the Application Does NOT Mean It Has Been Submitted
This is one of the most important instructions for PMSS renewal.
Step 10: Click “Save and Forward”
If the application status continues to show “New” on the student’s dashboard, KSB says this indicates that the application has not yet been submitted by the ESM/Student.
In such cases, the student must:
Open the application → Check details → Click “Save and Forward”
Only after forwarding will the application move ahead for processing.
Therefore:
New Status = Application is still with Student/ESM
Save & Forward = Application submitted for onward processing
Students should always check the dashboard after completing the application to ensure that the application has actually been forwarded.
Understanding PMSS Renewal Application Status
Many students become worried when their renewal application continues to show “Pending”.
KSB has clarified that a pending status does not necessarily mean that the application has been rejected or that no action is being taken.
The application may be moving through different levels/functionaries, such as:
User Level → Supervisory Level → JD (PMSS), KSB
After approval by the JD (PMSS), the list of students is sent to the Account Officer of KSB for processing of payment through the concerned bank.
Therefore, students should have patience and regularly check their KSB account and registered email/mobile number.
PMSS Renewal Processing Throughout the Year
KSB states that renewal applications are processed as and when received throughout the year.
However, students should note that during the period from January to May, KSB is also engaged in the processing, selection and preparation of the merit list for new applications of first-year students.
Therefore, processing timelines may vary.
A student should not assume that a “Pending” status automatically means that the application has been overlooked.
What Should You Do If PMSS Status Shows “Pending”?
If the status is showing Pending, students should first:
- Check their KSB dashboard.
- Check registered email.
- Check registered mobile number/SMS.
- Wait for the application to move through the prescribed processing levels.
- Avoid raising repeated queries immediately without checking the application status and applicable processing cycle.
KSB specifically advises students/ESMs to keep in mind the periodicity of checking applications before raising queries regarding application checking/payment status.
The message from KSB is essentially:
Have patience and regularly check your email and KSB account for updates.
Keep Your Mobile Number and Email ID Active
This is another important instruction that PMSS students should remember.
The mobile number and email ID provided for PMSS should remain functional until completion of the course.
KSB uses the registered:
- Mobile number
- Email ID
to send alerts and SMS/email communications regarding the PMSS application and its status.
Therefore, students should not abandon the mobile number or email account registered with KSB during the course.
What If Mobile Number or Email ID Changes?
If there is any change in the registered mobile number or email ID, the student should inform KSB through the prescribed procedure so that the record can be updated.
Failure to update contact details may result in students missing important communications.
