Birth and Early Life
Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon was born on 17 July 1943 in Punjab. Inspired by military values from an early age, he joined the Indian Air Force and was commissioned as a fighter pilot.
His professional excellence, discipline, and fearless attitude quickly earned him the respect of his fellow officers.
Heroic Action During the 1971 Indo-Pak War
On 14 December 1971, during the Indo-Pak War, Srinagar Air Base came under a surprise attack by Pakistan Air Force F-86 Sabre fighter aircraft.
Despite the enemy already attacking the airfield, Flying Officer Sekhon immediately scrambled his Folland Gnat fighter aircraft to intercept the incoming formation.
Facing overwhelming odds, he engaged multiple enemy aircraft single-handedly in an intense aerial dogfight over Srinagar.
During the engagement:
- He fearlessly challenged a much larger enemy formation.
- He successfully inflicted severe damage on attacking Sabre jets.
- His aggressive action disrupted the enemy’s attack plan.
- His gallant resistance forced the enemy formation to abandon its intended assault on Srinagar Airfield.
Although his aircraft was eventually hit and he lost his life in action, his courageous stand protected one of India’s strategically vital air bases.

For his conspicuous gallantry, indomitable courage, and supreme sacrifice, Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest wartime gallantry decoration.
