A Comprehensive Guide for Eligible Students and Ex-Servicemen Families

The Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme (PMSS), administered by the Kendriya Sainik Board (KSB) under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, aims to support the higher professional education of wards and widows of Ex-Servicemen (ESM) and Ex-Coast Guard personnel. For the academic year 2025–26, fresh applications are invited exclusively through the online portal: online.ksb.gov.in.

Eligibility Criteria for PMSS 2025

1.1 Who Can Apply for PMSS

Only the following categories of students are eligible:

  • Students who have taken admission in the 1st year of a professional or technical degree course during the current financial year (2025–26).
    (Lateral entry admissions and students in 2nd/3rd/4th year are NOT eligible.)
  • Students who are dependent wards or widows of Ex-servicemen and Ex-Coast Guard personnel.
  • Students who have scored 60% or above in the Minimum Educational Qualification (MEQ):
    10+2 / Diploma / Graduation.

1.2 Who Cannot Apply

  • Wards of Civilians or Para-Military Personnel (not part of Army/Navy/Air Force/Coast Guard).
  • Students studying in 2nd year or higher.
  • Students pursuing Master’s degree courses, except MBA and MCA.
  • Students studying abroad, or pursuing distance-learning/vocational courses.

Amount of Scholarship

  • Boys:30,000 per annum
  • Girls:36,000 per annum

Scholarship is granted annually, and renewal is based on performance and timely submission.

Eligible Courses

PMSS supports first professional degree courses, including integrated programs recognized by statutory bodies like AICTE, NMC, UGC, etc.

Approved Courses Include:

  • Engineering: BE, B.Tech
  • Medical: MBBS, BDS
  • Management & Commerce: BBA, BCA, B.Com (Professional), MBA
  • Pharmacy: B.Pharma
  • Law: BA LLB, BBA LLB
  • Education: B.Ed
  • Other professional courses listed in the official PMSS Course List (PDF, 134 KB).

Course Restrictions

  • Only one course can be funded under PMSS.
  • No support for distance learning, part-time, vocational, or foreign university courses.

Selection Process for PMSS

4.1 Merit-Based Selection

All submitted applications undergo detailed scrutiny, and a merit list is prepared based on:

  • Priority category (1 to 6) of the applicant
  • Marks obtained in MEQ (10+2/Diploma/Graduation)
  • Separate merit lists for male and female applicants

Priority Categories for Scholarship

Selection is strictly based on the following order of priority:

Category 1

Wards/Widows of ESM or Ex-Coast Guard personnel killed in action.

Category 2

Wards/Widows of personnel disabled in action and boarded out due to service-attributable disability.

Category 3

Wards/Widows of personnel who died in service due to service-related causes.

Category 4

Wards/Widows of personnel disabled in service with service-attributable disability.

Category 5

Wards/Widows of ESM or Ex-Coast Guard personnel who received Gallantry Awards.

Category 6

Wards/Widows of PBOR (Personnel Below Officer Rank) ESM/Ex-Coast Guard personnel.

Application Process

How to Apply for PMSS

  • Applications must be submitted online only via: online.ksb.gov.in
  • No offline or paper applications will be accepted.

Important Instructions

  • The email ID and mobile number used must belong to the student.
    An alternate mobile may belong to the ESM.
  • Registered contact details must not be changed, as all communication is sent there.
  • If any observation is raised by ZSB/RSB/KSB, it must be corrected within 10 days, or the application will be auto-rejected.
  • Applications showing “New” status on the portal indicate they have not yet been submitted.
    The applicant must click Save & Forward to complete submission.

Renewal and Application Tracking

  • New applications (1st year) are processed from January to May.
  • Renewal applications are processed throughout the year.
  • Students/ESM must periodically check their application status by logging into their KSB dashboard.

Last Date to Apply

The last date to apply online for PMSS for Academic Year 2025–26 is:

31 December 2025

Applicants are advised to apply early to avoid last-minute issues or technical delays.

Key Points to Remember

  • Respond promptly to emails/SMS from KSB.
  • Ensure rectification of objections within 10 days to avoid rejection.
  • Total scholarship amount from all sources must not exceed the PMSS entitlement.
  • Students studying abroad and those in distance/vocational courses are not eligible.
  • PMSS supports only one professional course per student.
