The Ministry of Education (MOE), Government of India (GOI) has established National Testing Agency (NTA) as an independent autonomous and self-sustained premier examining conducting org under the SR Act, 1860 for conducting efficient, transparent and international standards exams in order to assess the competency of candidates for admissions to premier higher educational institutions. Sainik Schools Society (SSS) is an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Defence, Govt of India. The Society runs Sainik Schools. Sainik Schools are English medium residential schools affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Sainik Schools prepare Cadets to join the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla (Pune), Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala and other Training Academies for officers. At present there are a total of 33 Sainik Schools across the country.

Sainik Schools offer admission at the level of Class VI and Class IX. Admission is based on the performance of candidates in the All India Sainik Schools Entrance Examination (AISSEE).

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has approved 18 New Sainik Schools, which operate in partnership with NGOs/private schools/State Governments. These approved New Sainik Schools function under the aegis of Sainik Schools Society. These approved New Sainik Schools offer admission to the Sainik School stream of Class VI, through AISSEE 2023.

Eligibility Criteria for admission to Sainik School

Candidates should fulfil the following. For admission to Sainik Schools ensure that the candidates have. However, the official admission notice is likely to be published soon.:

(a) For admission to Class VI: A candidate should be between 10 and 12 years as on 31 March 2024 for admission to Class VI, i.e. he/she should have been born between 01 April 2012 and 31 March 2014 (both days inclusive) for admission to the academic year 2024-25. Admission for Girls is open for Class VI. Age criteria is same as boys.

(b) For admission to Class IX : A candidate should be between 13 and 15 years as on 31 March 2024, for admission to Class IX, i.e. he should have been born between 01 April 2009 and 31 March 2011 (both days inclusive) for admission to the academic year 2024-25. Admission to Class IX is not open for girls. He should have passed Class VIII exam from a recognized school at the time of admission.

II. For admission to approved New Sainik Schools: Admission to approved New Sainik Schools in the Sainik School stream, for the academic year 2024- 25 is only at the level of Class VI.

(a) Eligibility requirements are as follows: A candidate should be between 10 and 12 years as on 31 March 2024 for admission to Class VI, i.e. he/she should have been born between 01 April 2012 and 31 March 2014 (both days inclusive) for admission to the academic year 2024-25. Admission for Girls is open for Class VI. Age criteria is same as boys. Candidates should be studying in one of the New Sainik Schools and must have passed/appearing in Class V as on 31.03.2024. Candidates are advised to check the availability of seats for their specific category and gender from Appendix VI of the Information Bulletin carefully.

The admission of candidates to existing 33 Sainik schools as well as New Sainik schools as approved recently (under the 40% route and 60% route) will be carried out on the basis of e-counseling out of the merit in AISSEE 2023, according to the NTA brochure of the national-level entrance exam.

During October 2021, the Union Cabinet approved a proposal of setting up of 100 New Sainik Schools with the public/Pvt partnership mode with NGOs, private schools, state government schools in all state and UTs. 194 schools had applied to get affiliated to the Sainik School Society, by the beginning of 2022 . In March 2022, the Ministry of Defence had approved the setting up of 21 new Sainik Schools. “Unlike existing Sainik Schools which are purely residential in nature,7 new Sainik Schools are day schools and 14 such new approved schools have residential arrangements,” . Later on 12 more Pvt/public partnership Sainik schools approved.

40% route: Minimum 40% of the seats under the Sainik School stream in approved NSSs will be filled on the basis of the rank secured in the All India Merit List of AISSEE 2023. Domicile/Category are not considered for this Merit List. Candidates can opt for any NSS in India, at the time of counselling.

60% route: Upto 60% of the seats in NSSs (New sainik Schools) will be filled by those who are currently studying in any of the approved NSSs. They will be filled on the basis of rank secured in School wise Merit List. Domicile/Category are not considered for this Merit List.
